The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
