Underwhelming Oracle Earnings Report Wipe More Than $70 Billion From Worth, Stoking AI Bubble Fears.

Oracle's lackluster latest earnings have wiped over $70 billion from the value of the software and data company established by Trump ally Larry Ellison, intensifying escalating apprehensions of a speculative bubble in artificial intelligence stocks.

Significant Stock Fall Follows Revenue Shortfall

Stock in the firm plunged by over 11 percent overnight after it reported a disappointing fourteen percent rise in revenues to $16bn in the previous quarter, as it simultaneously announced plans to increase its AI spending by about $15 billion.

The business recorded weaker-than-expected quarterly revenues for the period ending in November, with sales at its core cloud computing business growing at a more modest rate than anticipated, at 34 percent.

Investor Concerns Over Investment and Leverage

Markets were further disappointed by a more moderate 68% increase in income from its cloud infrastructure unit.

Concurrently, investors were spooked by the company's elevated projections for AI investment. It now projects capital expenditure to jump by 40% to $50 billion, with the lion's share of the additional spending allocated for constructing data centres.

This aggressive investment strategy is set against a increasing leverage, with Oracle's corporate debt having increased by 25 percent over the past year to reach $99.9 billion.

"Frankly, the report was not catastrophic, but it came to confirm fears around heavy AI spending, funded through debt, with an unknown timeline for profitability," noted a market analyst.

Wider Sector Implications and Industry Risks

Sustained excitement about the capabilities of AI technology has led to a sharp rise in stock prices in the past year, but there has been a rising number of warnings from policymakers and business leaders who say equity prices could plummet if investors become disappointed by the development or commercial uptake of AI technology.

While Oracle has established itself as a key technology provider developing enterprise solutions for large firms worldwide and has more recently found strength in the cloud sector, there are growing concerns about how reliant firms are becoming on each other’s financing within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle reported that its metric of contractual revenue rose by 440 percent over the last twelve months. However, market watchers were cautious when it was revealed that these commitments were driven by large deals from other tech giants like Meta and Amazon.

"While these are high-quality customers, it will not soothe concerns that the tech sector's AI investments are interdependent, which leaves it susceptible to a loss of market faith," commented a market strategist.

"In summary, robust contract growth was not enough to placate anxiety about AI and the enormous amount of investment spending required by companies to build AI capacity."

Ripple Effect in Tech Stocks

Additional AI and tech-related stocks also declined in after-hours trading following the Oracle announcement. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price dropped by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock declined by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the investment firm's shares fell by 7.7% on Thursday.
