Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
